Peter Nisbet asked:

If your Facebook or Friendster login has been refused then you will need a Friendster or Facebook proxy to get you into the site. The same is true of MySpace and YouTube. Why is it that so many people are seeking proxies for these social networking sites?

Not so long ago, as employers took on younger people, they also appear to take on their habits. Many young employees believed (still do) that when they start to work for an employer they can take their surfing habits with them. At every opportunity they would use the company computer to access their Friendster account, login to Facebook or find what the latest big video was on YouTube. Obviously, their employers did not like this.

The result was that employers blocked certain URLs. This wasn’t difficult because the vast majority of companies use an intranet system, so all they had to do was block the server from accessing these websites. As company networks became more sophisticated it was even possible to identify the computer from which the Friendster login attempt originated.

Universities and colleges soon followed, and it finally became obvious that private computers, or at least those operated by private concerns such as educational and government establishments, and businesses, were no longer willing to tolerate their staff using their computers or terminals to access social networking sites. Friendster login was refused, and those of other social networking sites.

This seemed unfair to many, and still does, because such sites are a means of communication just as cell phones are, and many use Twitter for example to send small messages to their friends. So what was the answer?

Simple when you think of it. The colleges and employers and whoever else blocks the URLs you visit, can only see one deep. So, if you visit a website that is not blocked, your company’s server won’t block you. You can log on to that site. Now, take it a step further. If you now use that website to log on to another website, your firm or college’s spying software can’t see that. It still thinks you are on the original innocuous website. Nobody except you knows that you are actually logged on to Friendster.

In basic terms, when it is used to log on to Facebook it is known as a Facebook proxy, and it can also be used as a Friendster login. A search box on another website can be used as a proxy to enable you to access any other website at all. It need not be YouTube, Friendster or, but any URL you want to access.

The problem with proxy sites is that once they have been used for a period of time, they are found, and that URL is then added to the list of banned sites. “Banned” does not mean that you should not access them: it means that you CANNOT access them. They too are blocked from you in the same way that a Friendster login is blocked.

That is why you need a regular source of proxy sites – finding one by accident seems great because you can log on to Friendster, and that Facebook proxy is allowing you to contact your buddies from work, but it won’t last. Once it has been blocked then what do you do?

Better by far to find a website that offers a free Friendster login or a Facebook proxy that you can rely upon. Such sites will carry out checks on the proxies they offer, and change them when they have been found out. You will always have a tried and tested proxy that works.

Kimberly Reynolds asked:

Social networking on Myspace or Friendster is booming as young adults find one another online to chat, post comments, post photos, and share info about the latest happenings in their world. The concept of Myspace, which is basically, a free bulletin board for anyone to create a web site that is all about networking and communicating with friends and creating new friends too is one of the fine cerebral approach of some genius.

With the potential users social networking on Myspace or Friendster is overwhelmed with information. Users create a free account; enter detail information about them and share their site with their friends. Their friends then post comments on the Myspace a reply. Myspace or Friendster is overflowing with different types of information exchange between teens, which may be good or bad. The users with easy to use tools at their administration can have a site, which was earlier thought that only the geeks could use it.

The sharing feature of Myspace or Friendster was initially used for good but later due to the posting of some content that is considered not to be spoken publicly has created the negative side of these sites. Another wrongdoings that have shaken the world of social networking is that the kids post news of a party in their area, to their site. Such postings spread out agitation and hatred within the community quickly. The teenagers who do not think much about its after affects generally make these postings. Some schools and the parents are getting alert to check the same. Schools have implemented rules to put the student run on the correct tract. They are warned that they would be thrown out if they do not clean up their sites. Parents are also trying to become good friends of their children guiding them with their knowledge and keeping watch on all their activities because there are chances to get involved in the wrong activities. Do not let them to access Internet and even if they are allowed to do the same then take care that they do not get involved in wrong doings. Take care that such event can have a fatal ending.

Though there are several negative sides but still Myspace or Friendster proved themselves as one of the hottest social networking sites with nearly 60 million subscribers and was recently bought by a major corporation because of its lucrative target market for advertising income.

Jack Yang asked:

Social Networking sites have taken the internet by storm. No longer just for keeping track of high school and college classmates, social networking has gone mainstream. I knew when I signed up for Facebook and saw that not only my younger cousins, but also my Aunts and Uncles in their 60s had profiles, that social networking had grown up.

If you define a social networking site as a web site with public profiles, a friend or contact list, and the ability for contacts to view and follow the contact list of their buddies, then the first social networking site was Six Degrees in 1997. Social sites hit the big time in 2002, and 2003 with Friendster and MySpace. Friendster became very popular and is seen as one of the biggest success stories, and failures of internet marketing, as its user share diminished with the popularity of MySpace and Facebook.

Starting as a professional network in 2003, LinkedIn is a job related social networking site. I call it MySpace for grownups. Plaxo, which started as a contact management application, has added more commenting and other features that make it into a full fledged social networking site. There are even social networking sites for your dogs and cats Dogster and Catster allow pet owners to create profiles for their animals. With the rapid growth of web, more and more networking sites are opened with innovative concepts, like Acobay in late 2008, which allows you to connect with people who have purchased the same products you own or are considering buying.

Sites such as Facebook have extended the traditional three elements of social networking (profiles, networks, and messages) to include features such as access from mobile devices, and applications that enhance the user experience on the site. Until legal problems pulled the application, Scrabulous had fantastic success on Facebook, and was responsible for some of Facebooks success in reaching a wider audience. Facebooks iPhone application is one of the most popular applications for download in the Apple App Store. The ability to take a picture on your iPhone and instantly and simply upload it to your Facebook profile is one of the most gee-whiz features of Facebook.

LinkedIn has become an integral part of maintaining a professional network. Since the economic downturn, it is more important than ever to keep in touch with people who work in the same industry and have similar backgrounds. LinkedIn, with its emphasis on current and previous co-workers and college contacts is a great way to develop and keep up with your network. LinkedIn gives people the ability to make professional recommendations for their coworkers, managers, and subordinates. LinkedIn lets you list your job skills and prospective employers and recruiters will use the site to search for job candidates.

Each social networking site has its own culture. MySpace has a strong youth feel to it, and many bands and artists have fan pages there. The ability to customize your profile with music and flashy graphics makes MySpace a favorite for younger set. Facebook seems to be growing in popularity and I am personally astounded at the number of my friends, relatives, and co-workers on there. I am jealous of iPhone owners ability to run the mobile application. LinkedIn is my favorite site as a job searcher. I have collected quite a few professional recommendations from my prior co-workers, and at least one recruiter has contacted me based on searching my LinkedIn profile.

Which social networking site or sites an individual signs up for will depend on a few factors. The biggest is probably who of your real life friends and relatives are on which site and who is trying to convince you to sign up. If your best friends keeps showing you cool stuff from their MySpace profile you may sign up and be their friend. If you find out all your cousins are on Facebook, you might be tempted to sign up for that. Whichever sites you sign up for, resist the temptation to release your inner child. Treat information listed on social sites as if it were accessible publicly so you will not regret posting anything later.
